ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington baseball team brought out the bats as they collected 29 hits in completing a sweep of Southeastern Louisiana 9-4 and 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks struck first in game two as Darrell Preston delivered an RBI groundout to score Kasey Baker in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter Pence delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Ryan Roberts from third. After a Hunter Pence single, Chris Taylor hit his third home run of the season over the left field fence for a two-run shot.
UTA added to its lead in the second inning as Baker delivered a one-out triple to right field and scored on an Aaron Batlle sacrifice fly to right field.
UTA added to its lead in the fifth inning as Roberts singled to leadoff the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Preston plated Roberts with single to left field. Taylor scored Preston with a single back through the box.
Deevers added the eighth run of the inning as he scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a single.
Charlie Coffey (3-1) picked up the victory by pitching six innings of shutout baseball allowing only four hits. Brad Miller (2-3) took the loss by allowing seven runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
Taylor led the offense with three hits and three runs batted in.
In the first game, the Mavs struck first in the second inning as Deevers led off the inning with a single to right field. Bruder followed with an RBI double off the left center field fence. With two outs, Bozarth singled to right field to score Bruder.
The Lions tied the score in the third inning as Jason Schwab scored Justin Casas with a single to right field. After two walks loaded the bases, Anthony Garibaldi delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
UTA struck back in the third inning as Roberts led off with a single up the middle. Pence plated Roberts with a double to left center field. Deevers followed with a single to center field for an RBI. After a Bruder single up the middle, Preston delivered an RBI single through the left side.
The Mavs padded their lead in the fourth as Taylor and Roberts delivered back-to-back RBI singles.
The Lions got a run back in the sixth inning as a pair of Maverick errors led to one unearned run.
UTA got the run back in the sixth inning as Roberts drew a two-out walk and went to third on a Pence double. Roberts would score on a balk by pitcher Jeremy Mizell.
The Mavs added another run in the eighth inning as Roberts delivered a two-out RBI single to left field to score Baker.
SLU got a run in the ninth inning as Garibaldi belted a solo shot over the left field fence.
Ricky Stover (3-0) picked up the victory by allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits in seven innings of work. Mark Weinmunson (2-3) took the loss by allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits in three innings of work.
Roberts led the offense by going 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs batted in. Baker added three hits and Taylor, Deevers, Bruder and Pence each collected two hits.
The Mavericks return to action Tuesday afternoon, April 25, as they travel to Stillwater, Okla. to take on the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
