OFFENSE PROPELS MAVS TO 9-4 VICTORY
March 25, 2006
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington first baseman Robby Winn has worked his way out of his early season slump as the junior went 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Mavericks remained unbeaten in conference play with a 9-4 victory over Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Colonels (8-17, 2-6 SLC) got into the scoring column with a two-out rally in the third. Michael Roberts started the rally with a slap base hit to the opposite field and went to second on a Jose Higuera walk. Patrick Harris drove in the run with a double down the left field line.
UTA took the lead in the fourth inning as they pushed across three runs on three hits. Justin Stevens started things with a double just inside the bag at third and went to third on Robby Winn's one-out single to center. Kyle Thomason drove in the go ahead run with a single through the right side before Kyle Rudy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brock Wilson drove in a run with a base on balls before Rieder delivered a sacrifice fly to center for the final run.
The lead grew to five in the fifth inning as Stevens hit a one-out double to right and went to third on Newby's single through the right side. Winn drove in both runners as he hard hit single bounded off the shortstop and went into the outfield, allowing a hustling Newby to slide around the throw to the plate.
NICH got a run back in the sixth as pinch hitter Chris Barnes was hit by a pitch and scored on Thomas Bourne's double to right field.
UTA got a pair of runs back in the home half of the inning as McLeod singled up the middle and went to third on Stevens' single through the left side. Newby drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt to first and Winn plated a run with a sharp single to center.
The Colonels took advantage of two Maverick errors to plate a run without a hit in the seventh. A leadoff walk and failed pick-off attempt put a runner on second before the next batter reached on error. A wild pitch scored the run before the inning was ending with a diving catch in the right center field gap by Newby.
UTA scored for the fourth straight inning as Rieder belted his first career home run down the right field line.
Dillon Gee (3-4) picked up the victory as he allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Jason Sullivan (0-2) took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.
Stevens added three hits, two doubles, while Rieder, McLeod and Wilson each added two as the Mavs pounded out 15 hits in the game.
The Mavs and Colonels close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. UTA will send LHP Randy Cornejo (2-1, 6.06 ERA) to the mound and the Colonels will counter with RHP Chris Greer (1-2, 4.94 ERA).
