March 28, 2010
NATCHITOCHES, La. - Michael Choice homered twice and went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead UT Arlington to its second straight Southland Conference series victory with a 10-3 win over Northwestern State Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.
The Mavericks (12-12, 5-4 SLC) scored nine runs in the final four innings while starting pitcher Logan Bawcom (2-1) won his second straight start for the Mavs pitching 8.0 innings and allowing three runs and one walk with six strikeouts. The loss dropped Northwestern State to 16-6 overall and to 4-4 in Southland Conference play.
Choice, who homered four times in four games on the week, belted opposite-field homers in the fourth (solo) and ninth innings (2-run) while tallying his third career multi-homer game. Choice leads the Southland Conference and is tied for fifth in the nation with 11 home runs this season.
Junior shortstop Jesse Payne homered for the second straight game hitting a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning.
The Demons scored the first run of the game off Bawcom in the second inning, but then the junior right-hander settled in allowing only four hits and two runs the rest of the way. Northwestern State also scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and in the seventh on a wild pitch.
Choice's solo shot in the fourth tied the game at 1-1 and then a four-run sixth inning gave the Mavericks the lead for good. In the fourth, Chad Comer drove in a pair of runs to give UTA the lead 3-2 with a single through the left side. The additional damage done by the Mavericks occurred on a dropped fly ball in right field which plated two additional runs for the Mavericks in the inning.
Choice, a junior preseason All-American, walked in the sixth and later scored and also posted an infield single in the seventh inning to finish with his 10th multi-hit game of the season. He has now reached base safely in 36 straight games dating back to last season. Choice's two homers on Sunday give him 29 for his career, trailing the UT Arlington all-time school record by only two (Matt Mize, 31 - 1998-99).
Maverick reliever Garrett Laird pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his fourth consecutive scoreless outing.
UTA catcher Chad Comer went 1-for-4 with two RBI to extend his career-high hit streak to 13 games. Payne went 2-for-4, left fielder Nick Orr went 2-for-4 and designated hitter Steffan Guest went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
UT Arlington will travel to No. 5 TCU on Tuesday, March 30, for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.
