ARLINGTON, Texas – Preston Beck smashed a home run in the seventh to put the finishing touches on UT Arlington's 11-1 run-rule victory over Southland Conference foe Central Arkansas on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks picked up their first three-game series sweep this season and ran their overall winning streak to four. UTA improved to 17-11 overall and evened its league mark at 6-6.
The Bears, who came into the weekend with a two-game SLC lead on UTA, dropped to 11-14 and 5-7.
The Mavericks scored 33 runs and pounded out 35 hits over the three games to jump back into the heart of the Southland Conference race.
"I'm really happy with the way we swung the bat this weekend," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "When we got guys on, we got some timely hitting. From the seventh inning yesterday on we really hit well. Overall it was a great weekend.
The Mavericks jumped on UCA quickly in the series finale, with three runs on four straight singles to open the first. The onslaught continued with another two runs in the second and five in the fourth to push the lead to 10-1.
League games on Sunday are called if one team has at least a 10-run lead after seven innings. The Mavericks were up nine with two outs in the seventh before Beck blasted his sixth homer of the season to right.
Beck finished the game 4-for-4 with another five RBI, pushing his conference-leading total to 39 this season. Ryan Walker had four hits for the second consecutive day.
The Mavericks' homestand picks up again Tuesday night (6:30 p.m.) against the University of Dallas.
