THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls starting pitcher Mike Wisecarver threw 8.1 solid innings against UT Arlington, leading the Colonels to a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.
However, Wisecarver shut the Mavs out through the first 8.0 innings. He gave up the two runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits over his 8.1 innings. The southpaw walked three and struck out six to outduel UTA starter John Beck.
Beck had one bad frame - a three-run fourth that unraveled after a one-out walk and hit batsman. He finished the day allowing three runs over 5.0 innings, limiting the Colonels (13-15, 3-9) to four hits. The freshman walked a batter, hit two more and struck out seven.
Nicholls got on the board in the fourth on Michael LeGrange's sacrifice fly. Philip Lyons later added two runs on a single.
The Colonels added an insurance run in the seventh on Jeremy Hill's RBI groundout and another on a wild pitch.
Vaughn had two hits for the Mavericks (15-13, 7-5), who lost a Southland Conference series for the first time all season.
UT Arlington returns to the field Tuesday when it plays a road game against Dallas Baptist at 6:30 p.m.
