ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington took advantage of three McNeese State errors in the third inning to put two unearned runs on the board enroute to a 6-2 victory over the Cowboys Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Cowboys struck first in the third inning as with one out Dooley Prince doubled to left field and Tommy Eubanks followed with a triple to left field scoring Prince. UTA minimized the damage as starter Aaron Pullin got the next batter to hit into a fielder's choice to third base nailing Eubanks at the plate.
The Mavericks took the lead in the home half of the third as Scott Williams reached on an error by the Cowboy third baseman and Dustin Bozarth followed with a walk. After Bozarth was erased at second on a Kasey Baker fielder's choice, Williams scored on a failed pickoff attempt of Baker at first, moving Baker to second. Baker then stole third and scored when catcher Ran Prince's throw sailed into left field with the third error of the inning.
The Mavericks added to their lead with two outs in the fourth as Darrell Preston doubled to left center field for UTA's first hit of the game. Chris Taylor followed with a run-producing single to right center field and proceeded to steal second. Robby Deevers blooped a single to right field advancing Taylor to third. Williams laced a single to center field to score Taylor with the second run of the inning.
The Cowboys threatened in the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a fielding error by the pitcher Pullin. Pullin then enticed the fielder's choice to third getting the first out at the plate. After walking in a run, Pullin got the next two batters to strike out swinging and fly out to right field, respectively.
MSU threatened again in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with two outs off of reliever Wes Detwiler. Mike Snapp came into the game and got Lance Dawkins to ground out to second base to end the threat.
UTA added insurance in the seventh as Ryan Roberts reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a two wild pitches. Hunter Pence plated Roberts with a sharp single to left field. Preston singled to left field advancing Pence to third. A wild pitch scored Pence with the sixth run of the game.
Pullin (4-1) picked up the win by allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings of work. He also walked four and struck out four. Rusty Begnaud (3-4) took the loss by allowing six runs, four earned, in 6.1 innings, striking out six. Mike Snapp earned his first save of the season as he pitched 2.1 innings allowing only one hit.
Pence, Preston and Deevers each collected two hits for the Mavericks. Baker's 20-game hit streak came to an end in the victory.
The Mavericks and Cowboys will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
