UTA - Zach Thompson (3-2, 4.86) vs. CSUB - Jonathan Montoya (3-1, 1.73)
ARLINGTON, Texas – Matt Shortall smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to lift UT Arlington to a 3-2 Western Athletic Conference win over CSU Bakersfield at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UT Arlington (16-13) remained in first place in the WAC, improving to 6-2 in the league. The Roadrunners (20-11, 5-3) and Mavericks have split the first two games of the series, which ends Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
"It's tough to score on a day like today," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "I thought our bullpen did a good job of keeping us in the game, which is what you have to do when the wind is blowing in. Shorty came up with the big hit when we needed it."
The Mavericks went into their final at-bat trailing 2-1. With one out, Shortall drove a smash into the cap left-center to score Jake Pinchback and Ryan Walker for the second walk-off win of the season.
"I was struggling a little bit," said Shortall, who went 2-5 and drove in all three runs. "I was just looking for something up and wanted to hit it hard."
CSUB starter Scott Brattvet limited UTA to one run on five hits. Brattvet pitched into the seventh and departed after allowing the first two runners on. The Mavericks couldn't cash in off reliever Dylan Christensen, who is also the Roadrunners' designated hitter.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the first after Derek Miller opened the inning with a single. Sacrificed to second by Walker, Miller scored on Shortall's bouncing single through the left side of the infield.
UTA starter Chase Weaver found himself in trouble in each of the first four innings, but managed to get through three innings unscathed. His luck ran out in the fourth, as Thomas was forced to make a pitching change.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases in the first on a hit and two walks before Weaver ended the inning with a strikeout. Two runners were left on in the second and third, and the bases were loaded again in the fourth with one outs when Milliman took the mound.
Bakersfield took a 2-1 lead on a Cael Brockmeyer's single to left and an error by UTA third baseball Peter Cuomo. The Roadrunners did leave the bases load, as Milliman registered a strikeout to limit the damage.
