MICHAEL CHOICE HITS TWO HOME RUNS IN EXTRA-INNING LOSS AT ORU
April 7, 2009
TULSA, Okla. - Michael Choice hit a two-run home run - his second of the game - in the top of the ninth inning to rally UT Arlington to a 7-7 tie against Oral Roberts. But it was the Golden Eagles who would have the final heroics of the night with a walk-off, two-run blast in the bottom of the 10th inning from Juan Martinez to earn the 9-7 victory at J.L. Stadium in Tulsa.
The Mavericks (16-15) and Golden Eagles (13-9) combined to use 15 pitchers in the mid-week contest that lasted 3 hours, 27 minutes with a total of 38 players making an appearance for both teams.
Oral Roberts led 6-2 going into the seventh inning, after scoring runs in the first, third and sixth innings and plating three runs in the fifth. Choice hit his first home run of the game in the fourth inning - a two-run bullet over the left-center field wall - driving in Jeff Storms, who hit an infield single to lead off the frame.
Freshman Jordan Vaughn started UT Arlington's rally with an RBI groundout in the seventh and then a passed ball scored Choice, who reached on a fielder's choice, in the eighth inning to bring the Mavs within three runs, 7-4.
Justin McPherson started the Mavericks' ninth inning when he reached base on a fielding error by ORU second baseman Kyle Price. Chad Comer, who entered the game defensively in the seventh, doubled to left-center field to give the Mavericks runners at second and third base.
McPherson scored the Mavericks' fifth run on an RBI groundout by Tim Steggall and then Jeff Storms popped up to first baseman Michael Notaro in foul territory to put ORU one out away from the victory.
Choice came to the plate and battled Golden Eagles' relief pitcher T.J. Kelly for eight pitches - with a full count - before Choice hit the ninth pitch he saw from Kelly over the left field fence to tie the game at 7-7.
The Golden Eagles weren't able to score in the ninth inning but won the game in the 10th on Martinez' walk-off home run - hit his second home run of the game - over the center field fence to give the Golden Eagles their 13th win of the season.
Mitchell tallied his fifth loss of the season pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs with two strikeouts. The Maverick pitching staff - consisting of six pitchers Tuesday night - struck out 14 ORU batters, but also issued seven base-on-balls.
Choice led the Mavericks going 2-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI with his two home runs while senior Andrew Kainer extended his career-high hit streak to 18 games with an infield single in the eighth inning. Kainer also tallied two walks and had two stolen bases in the game.
UT Arlington will return home on Thursday, April 9, to begin a three-game Southland Conference series at Clay Gould Ballpark with McNeese State. The Mavericks and Cowboys will begin their series on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and will follow with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday. Saturday the series will conclude with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
