ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT-Arlington baseball team had a chance to break the game wide open in the second inning, but left the bases loaded and Lamar quickly regained the momentum and the lead in completing the three-game sweep over the Mavericks, 8-5, Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Cardinals (25-11, 13-2 SLC) took advantage of a mistake in the field by the Mavs to plate a run in the second inning. Will Henderson started the inning with a towering pop up to short right field that fell between the second baseman and right fielder for a double. After a strikeout, Matt Lambeth advanced the runner with a bunt base hit to third. Jo Jo Haney drove in the run with a single through the left side.
The Mavs (14-20, 10-3 SLC) showed their first sign of life this weekend in the second inning as Danny Slinkman started a one-out rally with a single up the middle. Robby Winn followed with a single to center and Kyle Rudy had an infield single to third to load the bases. Brock Wilson drove in a run with a single up the middle and Justin Stevens drew a bases loaded walk. Daniel Rieder drove in the third run with a groundout to first and James Smith walked to re-load the bases. After getting ahead in the count 3-0, Adam Moore struck out to end the inning.
LU's offense wasted no time in getting back into the swing of things in the third as Ryan Baker drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a Dane Hernandez single to left center. Henderson drove in a run with a single down the right field line. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, the second run scored on an error off the bat of Lambeth. Haney drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
UTA got a run back in the bottom of the ninth as Winn hit a two-out double into the gap in right center and scored on Rudy's single just inside the bag at third.
A two-out fourth-inning rally gave the lead back to the Cardinals as Henderson was hit by a pitch and Hernandez singled to left field. C.J. Ebarb drove in a run with double to right field and Lambeth drove in a pair with a single to center.
UTA looked to get a big rally started in the eighth inning, but a double-play limited the Mavs to just one run. Winn singled to left and Rudy had an infield single to third. A hard hit ball off the bat of Wilson hit the side of the mound and bounced right to the shortstop for the 6-4-3 double play. Stevens drove in the only run of the inning with a double just inside the bag at third.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the ninth as a couple of hits and a walk loaded the bases for a Crawford sacrifice fly to center.
Rudy led the Mavs by going 4-for-4 at the plate and Winn went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Henderson collected four hits for the Cardinals.
Kyle Gainley (0-4) took the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits in one inning of relief. Derrick Gordon (3-2) picked up the victory by allowing two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of relief. Scott Meyer (1) picked up the save by allowing one hit over 1.1 innings.
The Mavs return to action on Tuesday, April 11 as they travel to take on Texas. First pitch is set for 6:15 p.m. at Disch-Falk Field.
