WACO, Texas - - UT Arlington's offense continued to produce, but the Mavericks committed three errors in the first three innings and couldn't overcome it Wednesday night in a non-conference loss, 6-5, against Baylor in Waco.

Baylor scored three runs in the first and added two more in the third to take a 6-1 lead - each inning was helped by a Mavericks defensive mistake. Despite a comeback effort and solid pitching by Brandon Endsley, Drew Clementz, Mark Picca and Rett Varner - they pitched the third through eighth innings and allowed one earned run while striking out eight - UTA could get no closer than the one-run deficit.

Down by five runs, UTA started to climb back into the game in the fourth, loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the inning. The Mavericks made it 6-2 on a double-play ball, and Preston McCoy's liner off the pitcher's leg made it 6-3. But Baylor got out of the inning without further damage by getting a pop foul to the catcher.

At the end of the fourth, UTA had out-hit Baylor nine hits to four, but still trailed by three runs.

In the sixth, the back-to-back hitting of No. 7 batter Ryan Davis and No. 8 batter Justin McPherson continued to give the Mavericks a chance. Davis singled to left-center with one out. McPherson followed with a double to left. That made Davis and McPherson 6-for-6 to that point with a double each.

Preston McCoy followed with a two-out double to left, scoring two and making it 6-5.

UTA threatened in the seventh and put the go-ahead run in scoring position when centerfielder Michael Choice led the inning with a walk and Slinkman followed with a single. A perfectly-executed, pinch-hit sacrifice bunt by Collin Garner moved Choice and Slinkman into scoring position, but consecutive strikeouts ended the inning.

UTA was forced to play catch-up early in the game.

Baylor's first batter Shaver Hansen drew a walk off Mavericks starter Matt Otteman, and Dustin Dickerson later hit a one-out fly ball to left that was mishandled to make it 1-0. With a strong wind blowing to left, cleanup hitter Adam Hornung followed with a powerful shot to left that easily cleared the fence and put the Bears up 3-0.

The Mavericks answered quickly in the top of the second off Baylor starter Aaron Miller.

Ryan Davis hit a two-out double down the right-field line, and Justin McPherson followed with a run-scoring single to cut the Baylor lead to 3-1.

The Bears got one run back in the bottom of the second on a hit batter, infield error and double down the left-field line by Hansen. Otteman and the Mavericks avoided any more damage that inning when Baylor loaded the bases with With the bases loaded and one out, Otteman got Dickerson to ground into a double-play.

Baylor took a commanding lead in the bottom of the third.

With UTA reliever Endsley in the game, Baylor got the leadoff man on base before UTA committed an error on what could have been a double-play. Instead, a double by Ben Booker with two runners on made it 6-1.
