WACO, Texas – The UT Arlington Mavericks fell to the Baylor Bears 14-4 in a midweek nonconference game Tuesday night. With the loss, the Mavs dropped to 16-15 overall.
Chad Nack earned the loss against the Bears and fell to 4-4 on the season. John Michael Twichell went 1-3 with a three-run home run in the second, his first of the season. Ryan Walker and Travis Sibley went 2-3 and 1-3, respectively. Pinch hitters Brent Bollinger and Cody Dyvig each had a base knock in the game.
Baylor exploded in the bottom of the sixth inning with seven runs on eight hits to take the lead. UT Arlington made three pitching changes in the Bears’ half of the inning, but was unable to maintain its early three-run lead. Baylor's 21 hits marked a season high allowed by the Mavs.
Brandon Lawrence drew a leadoff walk in the second inning, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Sibley also got aboard with a one out walk before Twichell tagged his first homer of the season over the right field fence to give the Mavs a 3-0 lead.
Walks and stolen bases put two Bears in scoring position with two outs at the bottom of the third, but a diving catch by Lawrence in left center field preserved the UTA shutout. Baylor began the bottom of the fifth with a standup double, but solid defense behind starting pitcher Daniel Milliman helped the Mavs get out of the jam.
In relief for Milliman, Keegan Hucul allowed back-to-back singles to Baylor in the bottom of the sixth inning to put runners at the corners. Another single put the Bears on the board, 3-1, and brought Nack to the mound for the Mavericks.
A wild pitch with the bases loaded brought Baylor within one, 3-2, before a two-run double gave the Bears their first lead of the night at 4-3. A double followed by a two-run single extended the Bears lead to four, 7-3, and brought in Kennedy Winn for the Mavs.
Sam Hansen entered the game for UTA with two Bears in scoring position and no outs in the bottom of the seventh. A suicide squeeze bunt followed by a single up the middle put the Bears up 9-3. Baylor added three more runs before Jacob Moreland entered the game on the mound for the Mavericks down 12-3.
Pinch hitter Bollinger added a run to the board for UTA with an RBI triple in the top of the eighth. But the Bears responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth to give them a 14-4 lead and end the ballgame.
The Mavericks will return to action Thursday as they take on Arlington Baptist at 6:30 p.m. at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie. UT Arlington resumes Western Athletic Conference play by hosting San Jose State in a three-game series at Clay Gould Ballpark from Friday through Sunday.
