HAMMOND, La. - UT Arlington had 12 base hits and Jesse Payne and Jordan Vaughn each homered in UT Arlington's 11-5 loss to No. 22 Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (25-7, 9-5 SLC) put away the win with a five-run sixth inning that included six base hits bringing nine batters to the plate. The Mavericks (15-16, 8-6 SLC), who tallied 12 hits in the loss, still have an opportunity to win their fourth straight conference series Sunday.
Southeastern Louisiana scored 11 runs on 18 hits while scoring in five separate innings with three in the second, one in the fourth and fifth, five in the sixth and one in the eighth to claim its 16th home win (16-3) of the year.
Brandon Efferson (6-1) was the winning pitcher for Southeastern pitching 7.0 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Mavericks starting pitcher Rett Varner (3-4) was saddled with his fourth loss of the season giving up seven runs on 12 hits in 5.0 innings of work with four strikeouts and one walk allowed.
Payne delivered the game's first run with a deep home run over the right field fence to put the Mavs on the board 1-0. Southeastern Louisiana came right back with their own home run off the bat of Joe Sparacino and also plated two other runs to grab a 3-1 lead.
The Mavs scored in the fourth inning as Beck led off the frame with a single through the left side and then scored on a double by Steffan Guest, although Beck advanced home on a fielding error by SLU left fielder Jeff Harkensee.
An RBI single from Chris Ernest put the Lions ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning and then Southeastern took a 5-2 lead with an RBI ground out by third baseman Chris Franklin.
The Lions had 10 base hits after five innings and had left six runners on base. They kept their offense rolling in the sixth inning by plating five runs on six hits off Varner and reliever Brian Watson. Maverick reliever Sam Hansen allowed two inherited runners to score in the sixth before ending the inning with a 4-6-3 double play.
Hansen pitched the final 2.2 innings of the game while giving up one run on three hits with one walk.
The Mavericks stranded runners at first and second base in both the seventh and eighth innings before capitalizing on a pair of runs in the ninth inning.
Vaughn scored the Mavs first run in the ninth by hitting a line-drive homer off the advertising signs beyond the left-field wall, and Comer drove in his fifth run of the series with a double down the left-field line.
Comer's double in the ninth scored Michael Choice who went 1-for-2 with a double and three walks. Choice reached base in four of five plate appearances while improving his Southland Conference leading on-base percentage to .541. He also leads the conference with a .766 slugging percentage and is now tied for second in the nation with 36 walks.
Choice has now reached base safely in 43 consecutive games dating back to last year. Choice also now owns an eight-game hit streak.
UT Arlington and Southeastern Louisiana will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
