ARLINGTON, Tex. - Mark Picca threw 5.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball, Jesse Payne had four hits and UT Arlington cruised against Mary Hardin-Baylor during a 13-3 victory Tuesday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Every Mavericks starter had a hit or contributed with a run or RBI.
Payne led the way with four hits. He also scored twice and drove in a couple. Nephew added three hits with a run and two RBI.
"It's good to get another win," UTA coach Darin Thomas said. "It was nice to get some people who had not played in a while some at-bats and innings. I thought we swung the bats pretty well today and I hope we can carry some momentum into this weekend's series with McNeese State."
Picca lasted 5.0 innings and faced one more than the minimum. He picked off two runners and also got the Crusaders (15-18) to hit into two double plays.
Chad Comer started the scoring in the first when his two-out single drove home Payne.
The Mavs padded their lead with eight runs in the third, highlighted by RBI doubles from Nephew, Morrow and Payne. The eight-run third marked the first eight-run inning since the Mavs scored nine in an inning against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on May 3, 2009.
Lopez earned his first RBI of the season in the seventh when his base hit up the middle scored
UT Arlington plays again Friday when its hosts McNeese State at Clay Gould Ballpark for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
