ARLINGTON, Texas - The Mavericks completed the weekend sweep of Western Athletic Conference opponent San Jose State with a 9-7 win Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark. UT Arlington improves to 20-15 overall and 9-3 in conference.
"The fact that we're now tied for first will help a lot as we face Seattle at their place next weekend," UTA head coach Darin Thomas said. "We just need to keep playing."
Daniel Milliman moved to 2-2 with the win and Keegan Hucul earned his first save of the season. John Michael Twichell went 3-4 with four RBI on the day. Ryan Walker, Matt Shortall and Justin Copeland all went 3-5 to help in the victory for the Mavs.
Early walks and timely hitting from San Jose State gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brandon Lawrence gave the Mavs their first hit of the game with a single to center in the bottom of the second inning. An error from the Spartan third basemen put runners on first and second before a single to right from Twichell would put UTA on the board, 4-1.
A safety squeeze bunt from San Jose State in the top of the third tacked on another run and extended the Spartan lead to four, 5-1. Once again, the Mavs answered back in the bottom of the inning after an RBI double from Shortall would score Walker who led off the inning with a triple. A sac fly to left from Lawrence scored Shortall and cut the San Jose State lead to two, 5-3.
Twichell tied things up 5-5 with a two RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back singles from Walker and Shortall started off the bottom of the fourth inning for UTA. A failed pickoff move to second advanced both Mavs into scoring position with one out before Greg McCall singled to give UT Arlington their first lead of the game, 6-5.
Lawrence earned his second RBI of the game with a single to score Shortall and extend the Mavs lead to two, 7-5. A well executed 6-4-3 double play ended a Spartan scoring threat in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Shortall and Copeland started the Mavs off in the bottom of the sixth inning, but San Jose State was able to end the threat.
Twichell tagged an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to put UTA up by three, 8-5. A single up the middle from Walker scored Twichell and extended the Mavs lead 9-5. The Spartans added two in the top of the ninth, but Hucul completed the ballgame to earn his first save of the year to finish the sweep of San Jose State with a 9-7 win.
