COWBOYS RETURN FAVOR IN SERIES FINALE
April 15, 2006
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Just moments after having the conference run-rule invoked against them, McNeese State turned the tables on UT-Arlington as they run-ruled the Mavs 10-0 in seven innings in the second game of the doubleheader. The Cowboys won the series, marking the second-straight series loss for UTA.
The Cowboys (20-15, 9-6 SLC) struck quickly in the first inning as Bryan Cartie singled to right and scored on Tyler Dugas home run off the left field foul pole.
MSU broke the game wide open in the second as James Thibodeaux singled and Shon Landry singled up the middle with one out. With two on and two outs, UTA starter Kyle Gainley had to come out of the game after injuring himself while fielding a bunt.
Ryan Martin came into the game and promptly gave up a two-run single to Cartie, an RBI double to Charlie Kingery and a two-run blast to Dugas.
The Cowboys added an unearned run in the fourth as Cartie reached on a bad-hop base hit and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt from Brandon Endsley. Kingery drove in the run with a chopper over the drawn-in infield.
Two more runs came across in the fifth inning as Thibodeaux singled to right and Faul followed with the same. After a wild pitch, Shon Landry drove in both with a double to left field.
Kyle Gainley (1-5) took the loss as he allowed four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings before leaving with injury. Chris Denton (7-2) picked up the complete-game five-hit shutout.
The highlight for the Mavs (16-22, 11-5 SLC) was Ben Burum's pinch-hit double in the seventh inning. The hit closed out Burum's weekend by going 7-for-7 with four doubles, one home run and seven RBIs.
The Mavs return to action on April 18-19 as they play host to Hawai'i-Hilo. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on both nights.
