HAMMOND, Louisiana - UT Arlington left hander Eamonn Donovan continued to look strong on the mound as he did not allow an earned run over five innings, but was on the losing end as the Mavs bullpen gave up four runs in the seventh in a 7-4 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Donovan (0-1) allowed three unearned runs on six hits and two strikeouts over five innings. He has now allowed just one earned run on the season and lowered his ERA to 0.69.
Donovan was matched step for step by SLU southpaw Wade Miley (4-4) who allowed two unearned runs on eight hits and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The Lions (25-16, 8-9 SLC) got on the board in the first inning as a two-out error by the Mavericks set up Dillon Sudduth's RBI single to center field.
UTA (11-28, 2-15 SLC) tied the game in the third inning as Leo Radkowski dropped a single in front of the right fielder and went to third when Kyle Rudy's hard-hit grounder was booted by the second baseman. The run scored when David Newby hit into a 5-4-3 double play.
Two more unearned runs crossed the plate in the fourth for the Lions as a leadoff single scored when a sacrifice bunt was thrown down the right-field line. That runner would score on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Scott Viator.
The Mavs added an unearned run of their own in the eighth as Newby doubled to center and scored when Daniel Rieder's infield single was thrown away at first.
SLU put the game away off the Mavs bullpen in the seventh as Richard Imhoff delivered a two-run home run to left field and Page Booker delivered a two-run single up the middle.
UTA did not go quietly in the ninth as Newby was hit by a pitch, Mitch Putman singled and Rieder walked to load the bases with one out. With two outs, Danny Slinkman delivered a two-run single to left center.
The Mavs and Lions will close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
