HUNTSVILLE, Texas – UT Arlington fell to 21-19 on the season with a 10-7 loss at Sam Houston State on Tuesday evening. The Mavericks maintained their 10-5 Western Athletic Conference record and are currently in sole possession of second place.
Matt Shortall (4-5, 3 runs, RBI, HR) and Brandon Lawrence (4-5, 4 RBI) both had solid performances at the plate. Chase Weaver, now 2-1 on the season, picked up the loss with 5.2 innings pitched in relief with six runs (three earned) on five hits and six strikeouts. It was his second longest outing from the bullpen this season.
The Mavericks loaded the bases with only one out in the top of the first inning. Lawrence hit a two-out single to right center to give UTA an early 2-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Brent Bollinger surrendered a leadoff double to Sam Houston State in the bottom of the first inning and a wild pitch would move the runner to third. A walk and a hit by pitch would load the bases for the Bearkats with no outs. A sacrifice fly to centerfield scored one before a home run to left would clear the bases and put SHSU up 4-2.
The Bearkats added another run in the bottom of the second to push their lead to 5-2. UT Arlington had a scoring opportunity in the top of the third, but left the bases loaded to end the threat.
Shortall tagged his fourth homer of the year to left-center to lead off the top of the fifth inning and cut the SHSU lead to 5-3. A walk, hit by pitch and single would load the bases for UTA for the third time in the contest. A fielder’s choice from John Michael Twichell would score one before back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning for the Mavs.
Singles from Shortall and Copeland followed by a walk to Greg McCall would once again load the bases for UTA in the top of the sixth with two outs. Lawrence recorded his fourth hit of the game to score the tying and go-ahead, as the Mavs lead 6-5.
An RBI single from Miller extended the UT Arlington lead to two (7-5) in the top of the seventh. A Maverick error would score one Bearkat in the bottom of the seventh. A well-executed squeeze bunt from Sam Houston State would tie the game at 7-7 with one out.
A three-run home run for SHSU would end Weaver’s night and brought in Kennedy Winn for the Mavs.
The Mavericks will return home to host UALR on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. UT Arlington travels to New Mexico State to resume WAC play with the three-game series starting Friday.
