ARLINGTON, Texas - Eight Maverick position players had multi-hit games and Rett Varner struck out 10 batters in 7.0 innings during UT Arlington's 8-3 victory over Central Arkansas in game two of the Southland Conference series at Clay Gould Ballpark Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (19-21, 12-8 SLC) pounded out 17 base hits, led by junior All-American Michael Choice's 3-for-4 effort with two runs, a walk and two RBI. Saturday's victory clinches the Mavs' fifth conference series of the season.
Central Arkansas (12-26, 4-16 SLC) drops its fifth straight game against the Mavericks in the loss.
Varner (5-4) was dominating throughout the game while only running into brief trouble in the fourth inning. He struck out a pair of batters in the second, third and fifth innings while giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits with three walks in the game.
The Bears scratched away three runs in the fourth inning on three base hits. Varner escaped the inning with runners at the corners striking out second baseman Jordan Getchell.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three hits in the first inning that scored two runs and with four hits in the second inning which plated four runs.
Catcher Chad Comer started the scoring with a two-run single through the left side in the first inning. Logan Bawcom scored a run with an RBI single and Choice followed with a two-run single up the middle. Designated hitter Steffan Guest scored Choice with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Central Arkansas starting pitcher Dustin Ward (1-5) lasted only one-plus inning while allowing six runs on seven hits allowing two walks without striking out a batter. UCA relief pitcher Jeremy Brewer threw the final 7.0 innings of the game allowing 10 hits and two runs with three strikeouts.
The Mavericks also struck for two runs in the fourth inning as Choice led off the frame with a single through the left side and Guest followed with a single up the middle. Preston Beck drove in Choice with an RBI single to right field and Jesse Payne scored Guest with an RBI single to left field.
Both teams combined to score 11 runs in the first four innings while neither team scored in the final five frames.
Choice has now reached base safely in 52 consecutive games dating back to last season. He has also now reached base safely via hit/walk/hit by pitch in 98 of his last 100 games played, which dates back to his freshman season. Choice currently leads the nation with 53 walks and his .571 on-base percentage is third in the country.
Nick Orr raised his batting average to .313 going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Bawcom went 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI while Guest (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) recorded his second straight multi-hit game.
Beck went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Comer finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while Payne collected two hits going 2-for-4 with an RBI and third baseman Brian Nephew went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
The Mavericks will go for their first series sweep of the season against the Bears on Sunday, April 25, with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled for Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington.
