ARLINGTON, Texas...Louisiana-Monroe capitalized on four Texas-Arlington errors and turned them into eight unearned runs as the Indians spoiled the Mavericks ballpark dedication with a 12-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Indians started the scoring in the first inning as Mario Filippi drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a balk. ULM attempted the double steal, but were unsuccessful as Kasey Baker took a throw from Darrell Preston at first and threw a strike to catcher Dustin Bozarth to nail Filippi at the plate. Joey Wolfe followed with a run producing double to left center field.
UTA quickly responded in the home half of the first as Baker started things with a double to right center. Chris Taylor advanced Baker to third with a groundout to shortstop. Ryan Roberts followed with a walk and Hunter Pence delivered a run producing single through the left side. Both runners advanced on a balk and Scott Williams drove in Roberts with a groundout to second base.
ULM wasted no time in regaining the lead as Jack Skaggs started things with a triple to the right center field gap. Following a groundout to the pitcher, Ben Jones delivered a single through the left side passed a diving Roberts to score Skaggs. Wolfe came through with his second RBI double of the game, this time to right center field scoring Jones with go ahead run.
The scoring continued in the third inning as Taylor beat out an infield single with one out. After a Roberts flyout to right field, Pence delivered a triple off of the top of the wall scoring Taylor with the tying run.
The Indians used a two out rally to score again in the fourth inning as Filippi and Jones collected singles and Wolfe drew a walk. Jerad Doty was hit by a Pierce Loveless pitch allowing the run to score.
ULM tallied an unearned run in the seventh inning as Adam Chance drew a one out walk and Daniel Raymond followed with a single to center field. Both runners advanced when center fielder Robby Deevers bobbled the ball. Chance came into score on a wild pitch from Loveless.
The Indians added two more unearned runs in the eighth inning as Jones singled with two outs and Wolfe walked. Doty reached as Roberts had a fielding error to load the bases. Chance singled past the glove of Baker in the hole at short scoring Jones and Wolfe.
ULM added five more unearned runs in the ninth inning on five hits and two more Maverick errors.
Adam Arrant (3-2) earned the victory by allowing three runs in 5.1 innings of work. Pierce Loveless (1-3) took the loss by allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Pence and Preston led the offense with three hits apiece, while Taylor added two hits.
The Mavericks and Indians close out the series with a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee at Clay Gould Ballpark.
