ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington matched its win total from last season as six Maverick pitchers combined to allow one run on five hits in a 12 victory over Dallas Baptist Wednesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Spencer Dean led the offense by raising his average 127 points to by going 3-for-3 with a double and two singles in only his fourth start of the season behind the dish.
The Mavericks (29-19) got on the board in the first inning as Kasey Baker hit the first pitch of the inning back through the middl for a base hit. With one out, Baker advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Ryan Roberts reached on a walk and advanced to second when Baker was thrown out at the plate on a relay throw from the second baseman to the catcher. Hunter Pence plated Roberts with a run producing single back up the middle.
UTA added to its lead in the third inning as Dean started things with a single to center field. Baker followed with his 19th double of the season into the left center field gap. Aaron Batlle scored Dean with a groundout to first base. Roberts collected his league leading 59th RBI of the season with a double to left center field.
The Mavericks padded their lead in the fifth inning as they plated four runners on four hits and one Patriot error. Pence got the rally starting with a one-out walk. Taylor followed with a single through the left side. Darrell Preston singled to right field to score Pence and when the ball got passed the right fielder Drew Holder, Taylor came into to score and Preston advanced all the way to third. With two outs, Robby Deevers singled to center field to score Preston. After stealing second, Dean collected his third hit of the game with a RBI double to right center field.
The Maverick seventh inning saw Shawn Menke start a rally with a single to left field. Darrell Preston delivered a double to right field advancing Menke to third. Clay Silver came into to run for Preston and a balk allowed Menke to score and Silver to go to third. Deevers plated Silver with a sacrifice fly to right field.
UTA put together a two out rally in the eighth inning to score two more runs. Roberts drew a walk to start things and Dustin Duncan delivered a single to right field moving Roberts to third. Menke plated both runners with a double to right center field and advanced to third on a Dan Dody single to right center. Daniel Lenihan closed out the scoring with a RBI infield single to second base.
The Patriots (28-22) got on the board in the ninth inning as Justin Locey was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout to Menke at second base. Drew Holder place bloop down the right field line to score Locey with the only DBU run.
Pierce Loveless (2-3) picked up the victory by allowing one hit and striking out three batters in a predetermined three innings of work. Lance Broadway (4-6) took the loss by allowing three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Loveless, along with Michael Garza, Derek Brehm, Wes Detwiler, Chris Reed and B.J. Brandenberger combined to strike out nine Patriot hitters in allowing only the one run of five hits.
Baker and Dean each collected three hits, while Roberts, Taylor and Preston collected two apiece as the Mavericks pounded out 19 hits in the game.
The Mavericks return to action Tuesday, May 6, as they close out their 2003 home season with a game against the Rams of Texas Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
