ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington dropped the finale of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series to Dallas Baptist 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks lost the final two games after taking Friday's series opener. UT Arlington falls to 25-23 overall and sits second place in the WAC at 13-8. The Patriots are 25-23 and 11-10.
The Mavericks won't return to the diamond until Friday against Texas State in the last WAC home series of the season.
Dallas Baptist starter Cody Beam (4-1) and three relievers kept the Mavericks' offense in check. UT Arlington did rack up 11 hits, but 10 men were left on base. The Mavericks didn't get a hit with a runner in scoring position until pinch hitter Cody Dyvig's RBI-run single in the ninth.
"We didn't play very well, especially at the plate," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "We held them to five and escaped some jams."
UT Arlington got on the board in the sixth, cutting the DBU lead to 3-1. The Mavericks loaded the bases with one out and scored on John Michael Twichell's RBI groundout. A strikeout ended the inning with runners at second and third.
The Mavericks had a golden chance to take the lead in the second. Twichell doubled down the line in right to set up runners at second and third (Darien McLemore) with one out. A foul out and ground out ended the threat.
The Patriots got to UT Arlington starter Keegan Hucul (0-2) in the third, scoring three runs on three hits. Hucul was pulled in favor of lefty reliever Chase Weaver. DBU added two more runs against John Beck.
