BURUM'S BLAST IGNITES RALLY

ARLINGTON, Texas - Ben Burum's two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning sparked a five-run rally as UT-Arlington turned a one-run deficit into a four-run lead in going on to defeat Sam Houston State 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. The victory gave the Mavs the series and moved them one step closer to securing a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
David McLeod starting the sixth inning with a single up the middle. After a stolen base and a throwing error by the catcher moved McLeod to third, Burum blasted a two-run shot far over the right field wall for a two-run shot, his third of the year.
The rally really got started with two outs as Danny Slinkman singled up the middle and stole second. Kyle Rudy drove in the runner with a double just inside the bag at third and Brock Wilson traded places with him with a double to left center. Collin Garner drove in the final run of the inning with a single to left center.
Chris Taylor (3-4) took the ball for the Mavs after throwing 42 pitches to close out yesterday's game, and picked up the victory after allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
SHSU (23-24, 12-12 SLC) got on the board in the first as Clint Mann was hit by a pitch. After a sac bunt, Dustin Martin drove in the runner with an opposite field double down the left field line.
UTA (22-29, 15-10 SLC) tied the game in third inning as Garner beat out a chopper to short and stole second. McLeod singled through the left side and Garner scored as the left fielder mishandled the ball.
The Kats regained the lead in the sixth as Karl Krailo doubled to right center to start the inning. After a sac bunt, Gregory O'Neil plated the runner with a sacrifice fly to center field.
SHSU got a run back in the top of the seventh as Daniel Cox double to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyson Mire.
UTA responded with three runs of their own in the home-half of the inning as Adam Moore single to left center and Robby Winn had a one-out single up the middle. With two outs, Rudy doubled just inside the bag at third to plate two runs and scored on Wilson's double to right center.
Dillon Gee (1) earned the save as he allowed one run on three hits in three innings of work. Luke Prihoda (3-5) took the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, on 10 hits in 5.2 innings.
McLeod, Moore, Winn, Rudy, Wilson, and Garner each collected two hits as the Mavs pounded out 15 hits for the second straight day. Rudy drove in three, while Burum and Wilson each collected two RBIs.
The Mavs return to Southland Conference action next Friday as they travel to play Texas State at 6:30 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
