MOBILE, Ala. -- South Alabama used the first seven runs of the game to post a 7-2 win over UTA baseball to sweep the three-game series, on a steamy Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.

UTA (21-30, 11-16 Sun Belt Conference) fell in the series finale at South Alabama (29-20, 17-9 Sun Belt) as the Jags posted a series sweep over the Mavericks to conclude UTA's road schedule.

The Jags plated single runs in the first, third and fifth innings before exploding for a four-run seventh. UTA scored two in the eighth for the final margin.

UTA got hits from Zac Cook, Josh Minjarez, Phillip Childs, Will Olson, Christian Hollie and RJ Williams. David Renning scored a run with Minjarez and Hollie each notching RBI.

UTA starter Ka'ikepono Anderson (0-4) worked six innings, allowing six hits and three runs, walking three. Jordon West and Daniel James worked in the seventh and eighth, with James getting the final six outs.

South Alabama starter Patrick McBride (1-1) worked six-shutout, one-hit innings, allowing just a walk and striking out two. He retired 18 of the 20 hitters he faced before handing the ball to JoJo Booker with a three-run lead. Booker, Chase Lambert, Nick DeSantis and Zach Greene worked in relief.

The Mavs will return to action on Thursday with the opener of a three-game series with Texas State at 6:30 p.m. CT at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Jags opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, getting a pair on with a hit and walk before Wells Davis singled off the diving mitt of Cook up the middle with two outs.

Paul Russo stretched the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning, his third of the year.

A walk, hit and sac fly from Davis scored the third run of the game for the Jags in the bottom of the fifth.

A leadoff single and a hit-and-run single pushed runners to the corners in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brendan Donovan then pulled an RBI single through the right side to score Travis Swaggerty. A bunt allowed runners to score on a throwing error to stretch the lead to 5-0. Davis then lined a single into the gap to score the sixth run for the Jags. A sac fly from Russo stretched the lead to 7-0.

UTA got on the board in the eighth inning, getting a two-out, two-strike single from Cook. Minjarez then blooped a RBI single into the gap to score Renning. After a hit batter loaded the bases, Hollie lofted a single into centerfield to allow Cook to score.
