Box Score

The University of Texas at Arlington baseball lost any chance of winning the regular season Southland Conference championship as they fell to front runner Lamar 4-1 Thursday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium. With the victory, LU clinched the regular season title and the top seed in next week's postseason tournament.

Jesse Floyd improved to 8-0 on the season as he shut down the Maverick offense allowing only one unearned run on six hits, while striking out eight, for his second straight complete game victory.

The Cardinals (36-13, 19-5 SLC) struck in the third inning as Shane Jensen started the inning with a double to right center field. After being sacrificed to third, Jordan Foster singled through the left side to score Jensen. Foster proceeded to steal second and came into score on a Shaun Stanton double down the right field line.

LU struck again in the fifth inning as Jensen singled through the right side to start things before stealing second base and going to third on a bad throw from catcher Dustin Bozarth back to pitcher Aaron Pullin. Foster followed with his third hit of the game as he hit a RBI single through the right side. Pirkle singled to center field, but Foster was gunned down at the plate as Robby Deevers threw a strike to Bozarth to end the inning.

The Cardinals cracked the scoreboard again in the sixth inning as John Allen homered to left field to start the inning and give LU a 4-0 lead.

UTA (32-22, 17-8 SLC) got on the board in the seventh inning as Hunter Pence hit a sharp single to left field. Darrell Preston reached on a fielding error allowing Pence to go to third. Paul Bruder plated the run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. After Aaron Batlle flied out to very deep right field, Robby Deevers reached on the Cardinals second error of the inning. With two runners on, pinch hitter Dan Dody struck out looking to end the rally.

Aaron Pullin (7-2) took the loss as he allowed four earned runs on 14 hits in 7.1 innings of work.

Pence and Batlle each collected two hits as the Mavericks were only to collect six hits in the game.

The Mavericks and Cardinals play the second game of the series tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont.
