BEAUMONT, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington baseball team did not even stand a chance in the regular season finale as Lamar hung four runs on the Mavericks and put a six spot up in the second on the way to a 15-0, seven inning, victory in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Mavericks ended the regular season with an overall record of 33-23, and an 18-9 mark in the SLC. UTA will enter the postseason tournament as the No. 3 seed.
The Cardinals (37-14, 20-6 SLC) got rolling right away as the first two batters reached safely and two of the next three batters collected RBI singles. A sacrifice fly scored the third run and a two out single scored the fourth run of the inning.
LU went right back at it in the second inning as two UTA relievers combined to yield six more runs on six hits with the two big hits being a Wade Pirkle three-run double and a Ryan Finan three-run homer down the right field line.
The Cardinals added the 11th run of the game in the third inning as Pirkle collected his fourth RBI of the game with a double into the left center field gap.
The 12th run of the game came into score as a Matt Gowan double pushed Shaun Stanton to third after Stanton was hit by a pitch. Jeremy Gray scored the run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Four more hits, inlcuding three doubles, led to three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning by LU.
Josh Gray (7-5) earned the victory by allowing only five hits in the seven inning complete game shutout. Charlie Coffey (6-4) took the loss by allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits, with two walks, in just one inning of work.
Darrell Preston led the offense with a pair of hits as the Mavs had a season low five hits.
The Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, May 21, as they start the 2003 Southland Conference postseason tournament at Indian Field in Monroe, Louisiana. The game time and opponent are yet to be determined.
