ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington broke open a tight game and beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-2 victory Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks have won the first two in the series to improve to 31-23 overall and 18-14 in the Southland Conference. The Islanders dropped to 23-30 and 14-18.
"Getting six runs off (A&M-CC pitcher Trevor Foss) was a real accomplishment," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said.
UTA goes for the sweep Saturday in the last game of the regular season with a first pitch set for 2 p.m. John Beck is scheduled to start for the Mavericks.
"The key to the game was we were able to dodge some bullets," Thomas said.
UTA right-handed Collin Reynolds (4-1) picked up the win, working 1.2 innings in relief of starter Michael Oberto. Adam Boydston pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his sixth save, leaving him one shy of tying the UTA career record of 23.
The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on the strength of four hits. Preston Beck singled to center with the bases loaded to score the first run, with the second coming on Michael Guerra's fielder's choice.
UTA added three insurance runs in the eighth. Michael Guerra had the big blow with a two-run double down the left-field line.
Ten Mavericks were honored before the game for Senior Day: Philip Incaviglia, Adam Boydston, Michael Oberto, Lance Day, Jordan Vaughn, Michael Morales, Collin Reynolds, Adam Westbrook, Preston Morrow and Guerra. All 10 are on track to graduate.
