SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Omar Salinas charted a career-high four hits but UTA fell behind by five runs after five innings and Texas State held off a late charge from the Mavs to post a 7-6 win in the series opener on Thursday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
UTA (29-23, 19-9 Sun Belt Conference) found itself in a 6-1 hole after five innings, as Texas State (26-28, 12-16 Sun Belt) used two runs in the first, one in the fourth and a four-run fifth inning for an early lead. The Mavs fought back to score five consecutive runs but lined into an inning-ending double play in the eighth inning to thwart their best scoring chance in the final two frames.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Kadon Simmons (7-4) worked 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs – five earned – walking two and striking out four. After allowing a three-run homer in the fifth inning, UTA replaced Simmons with Dylan Schneider on the mound.
Schneider worked 3.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits and one run, striking out four.
Texas State starter Nicholas Fraze (5-2) worked four innings, allowing two hits and one run, not issuing a walk and striking out two. Brandon Lewis tossed 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, walking two with four strikeouts. Connor Reich and Brayden Theriot worked the final 2.2 innings with Theriot earning his first save of the year.
AT THE PLATE
The Mavs were led at the plate by Salinas, who went 4-for-5 with his ninth home run of the year. UTA also got a two-hit game from Christian Hollie and hits from Brady Cox, Will Olson and Noah Vaughan. Vaughan drove in a pair with a two-out single and UTA also got walks from Easton Johnson and RJ Williams.
HOW THEY SCORED
Texas State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, getting one-out singles from Jonathan Ortega and Dylan Paul. The throw to try and get Paul at first base sailed high, allowing the pair to take an extra base. After Simmons responded with a strikeout for the second out, Jaylen Hubbard drove home two with a single up the middle.
UTA got a run back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 2-1 on the strength of a solo homer from Salinas, his ninth of the year.
Texas State stretched its lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jaylen Hubbard was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Travon Benton scored him with a triple to right-centerfield.
Theodore Hoffman stretched the Texas State lead with a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hubbard then greeted Schneider's first pitch with a no-doubt homer over the leftfield fence.
UTA rallied with three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning. Salinas reached on a one-out single and Olson followed with a single into centerfield. Vaughan followed with a full-count walk to load the bases. Williams then forced in Salinas with a grounder that was misplayed behind third base. Hollie then beat out an infield single to score Vaughan and Olson plated during Hollie's at-bat on a passed ball.
The series will resume on Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Bobcat Ballpark. UTA will turn to junior righty Trae Patterson (6-1, 2.42 ERA).
