NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State right-hander Daniel Lonsberry limited the Texas-Arlington to just five hits as the Demons shutout the Mavericks 6-0 Thursday evening at Brown-Stroud Field.
The loss dropped the Mavs to 25-28 overall and 14-11 in Southland Conference play. NWLa. improved to 38-16 overall and 20-5 in conference. The Mavs loss dropped UTA into a third place tie with Texas State who dropped a 4-3 decision at Lamar.
The Demons score what turned out to be the game-winning run in the fourth inning as Miles Durham drew a base on balls and scored on Hunter Thoms two-out double down the left field line.
The Mavs had their best chance to get on the board in the seventh as Daniel Macha started the inning with a walk and Boomer Welles followed with a single to left field. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, a lineout and a groundout, the Mavs did not get the runner to third.
NWLa. responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning as Michael Palermo delivered a two-out two-run triple into right center. Marty Dewees followed with a bloop single down the right field line to score Palermo.
The Demons added a pair of runs in the eighth on a solo home run off the bat of Brandon Morgan and a fielding error by the Mavs defense.
Jake Baxter (7-6) took the loss as he allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.
Welles led the Mavs offense with two hits. Rusty Jones and Thoms each had two hits for the Demons.
The Mavs and Demons play the second game of the series tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at Brown-Stroud Field.
