MAVS BACK INTO SLC TOURNAMENT AFTER 4-3 LOSS TO DEMONS

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State third baseman Hunter Thoms' RBI double into the gap in left center field drove in the game-winning run as the Demons rallied to complete the sweep 4-3 over Texas-Arlington at Brown-Stroud Field.
UTA (25-30, 14-13 SLC) got on the board in the third inning as Josh McSpadden started the inning by being hit by a pitch. With two outs and McSpadden on second, Nathan Warrick delivered an RBI single to left center.
The Demons (40-16, 22-5 SLC) gained the lead in the third inning as Philip Miller beat out an infield single to short and Rusty Jones followed with a wind blown home run down the right field line that was narrowly caught by Scott Williams.
The Mavs regained the lead in the fifth inning as Aaron Batlle delivered a one-out double into the gap in right center and Brett Lewis followed with a run-producing double just inside the bag at third.
NWLa. responded in the sixth inning as Blake Jones tied the score with a solo home run to left center. With two outs, Brandon Morgan drew a base on balls and scored on Thoms' double to left center.
Dillon Gee (5-7) took the loss as he allowed four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work. Sean Jonston (2-0) earned the victory out of the bullpen as he pitched three shutout innings allowing only one hit. Daniel Desclouds earned his school-record 10th save as he pitched a perfect ninth inning.
The Mavs return to action on May 25 they they open up Southland Conference Tournament action at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches, La. Game time and opponent are yet to be determined.
