MONROE, Louisiana...The University of Texas at Arlington was not able to rebound from the big inning again as McNeese State scored six runs in the second inning and went on for a 12-3 victory over the Mavs on Friday afternoon at Indian Field.
The Mavericks (35-24) scratched a run across in the first inning as a walk by Chris Taylor and single by Ryan Roberts, followed by a walk to Hunter Pence loaded the bases with one out. Darrell Preston hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but hustled down the line to beat out the double play and drive in the game's first run. The RBI, Preston's 38th of the season, moved Preston into the third spot on UTA's all-time RBI list with 132 in his career.
The Cowboys (30-27) took their first lead of the game in the home half of the first as Dooley Prince reached on a Roberts error and advanced to second on a passed ball. Brother, Ran Prince doubled to left center field to score Dooley. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly to left field by Chris Fontenot gave MSU the one run lead.
UTA was unable to avoid the big inning again as the MSU pushed across six runs in the second inning to give them a seven run lead after the first two innings. A leadoff walk and a pair of bunt base hits loaded the bases with no outs. Ran Prince drew a RBI base on balls and Tommy Eubanks collected a run producing single through the right side. After a sacrifice fly added another run, Derek Bordelon hit a two run single through the right side on the first pitch he saw from reliever Wes Detwiler. Detwiler was able to catch Bordelon leaning off first base, but the runner was able to score from third before the tag was applied to end the inning.
Roberts got a run back for the Mavericks in the third inning as he deposited his 15th home run of the season over the right field wall.
MSU continued to score in every inning in the third as Lance Dawkins started the inning with a single through the left side and was sacrificed to second. Dooley Prince hit a line drive off the glove of a jumping Taylor to plate the ninth run of the game for the Cowboys.
UTA put a run across in the fifth inning as Dustin Bozarth reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Baker delivered a single up the middle to score Bozarth with the third Maverick run.
MSU reached double figures in the sixth inning as Lemke doubled to right center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming in to score on a wild pitch.
The Cowboys stretched the lead in the seventh on a pair of singles and throwing error, followed with a sacrifice fly for a pair of runs.
Walt Nolen (1-3) picked up his first win of the season by going six innings, allowing only three runs, two earned, on five hits. Ricky Stover (6-1) took his first loss of the season by giving up eight runs, six earned, on four hits in only 1.2 innings of work. Stover did not help his cause by walking five batters and only striking out one.
Baker collected three hits in the game, while Roberts had two.
The Mavericks return to the diamond later this evening as they will take on the winner of the Louisiana-Monroe-Southwest Texas game at 7 p.m. at Indian Field.
