Jan. 21, 2009
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Southland Conference announced its 2009 baseball preseason coaches' and sports information directors' polls on Wednesday, as the Mavericks were picked sixth in both polls among 12 SLC programs. UT Arlington returns 26 lettermen, including 21 seniors, after finishing 26-31 during the 2008 season.
UT Arlington received 63 points in the coaches' poll and tallied 64 points in the SID poll. The top five featured the same teams in each poll, with placement varying from second to fifth place. Two-time defending regular season champion UTSA was the preseason favorite in both polls, grabbing 110 points in the coaches' poll and 111 points in the SID poll.
In the coaches' poll, Texas State and defending conference tournament champion Sam Houston State each collected 106 points, with Lamar (97) and Northwestern State (78) finishing out the top five.
Southeastern Louisiana (62) was just one point behind the sixth-place Mavericks while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (57), Central Arkansas (36), Stephen F. Austin (35), McNeese State (28) and Nicholls (14) rounded out the poll.
Despite three first-place votes in the SID poll, Sam Houston State received 80 points for fifth place, placing them behind UTSA (111), Lamar (102), Texas State (95) and Northwestern State (83) in the top five. The SID poll matched the coaches' poll in slots six through 12.
The Roadrunners received five first-place votes in each poll. Texas State, Sam Houston State and Lamar each tallied first-place votes in each poll.
The past two seasons the Southland Conference played in two divisions (East and West), but this year is going back to round-robin play with the 12 teams playing each of the other 11 teams in a three-game series.
The SLC Tournament will be held May 20-23 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas, home of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks.
