Baseball, Softball celebrate First Pitch
Jan. 21, 2011
ARLINGTON, Tex. - UT Arlington held its inaugural First Pitch Banquet on Friday at the Bluebonnet Ballroom to celebrate the start of the 2011 baseball and softball seasons.
The fundraising dinner featured introductions of both teams as well as guest speakers.
More importantly, the event gave families and faculty the opportunity to meet both teams.
"This was an outstanding night for both programs," UT Arlington softball coach Debbie Hedrick said. "The banquet gave our athletes the chance to introduce themselves to people who truly support UT Arlington athletics and for everybody to get to know our players."
Every player from the two teams was introduced followed by opening remarks from UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo.
After dinner, Hedrick and baseball coach Darin Thomas previewed their respective seasons while also looking back on the 2010 achievements.
Some former players, such as baseball players Michael Choice and Logan Bawcom, were recognized during the night. Bo Carter of the Society of American Baseball Research also awarded Choice with the 2010 Howard Green SABR Metroplex College Player of the Year trophy.
Hall of Honor members Brenda Marshall and Trey Hillman each reflected on their respective UT Arlington careers. Marshall traced her path from UT Arlington softball standout to Corpus Christi ISD athletics director. Hillman, meanwhile, thanked those who helped him pave his way from UT Arlington to a career in professional baseball as a player, coach and manager.
"I just want to thank everyone who had a hand in making this all possible," Thomas said. "This was such a great night to recognize those who helped UTA in 2010 while also looking forward to the 2011 season."
