ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington baseball held its first team practice of the 2014 season Friday afternoon.
“We are excited to get started,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “We have a ways to go, so we will get them in as many game like situations as possible before Feb. 14.”
The Mavericks went 31-27 last year, earning a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season title. UTA will compete as a member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2014, its third league in as many years.
UT Arlington is returning 18 letterwinners, while welcoming 18 newcomers to the 2014 squad. The Mavericks will look for repeat standout performances from across the lineup, including seniors Greg McCall, Matt Shortall and Brad Vachon.
McCall, a senior catcher from Frisco, Texas, earned second team All-WAC honors last season along with Vachon, a senior right-handed pitcher from Round Rock, Texas. Shortall, a senior outfielder from Dallas, was named first team All-WAC, as well as the Louisville Slugger All-American third team.
The Mavs open their 2014 slate by hosting the UTA Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark on Feb. 14. UTA will face Stephen F. Austin, Incarnate Word and Oklahoma State during the weekend tournament.
