Baseball picked to finish ninth in SLC
Jan. 25, 2011
ARLINGTON, Tex. - UT Arlington was picked to finish ninth in the Southland Conference by coaches and sports information directors in the preseason polls, the league announced Tuesday.
Senior catcher Chad Comer earned preseason Second-Team All-Southland Conference honors. He was the only Maverick to earn any preseason accolades.
The Mavericks finished fifth in the regular season in 2010 and made it to the final day of the SLC Tournament. However, UTA also loses key contributors including 2010 Player of the Year Michael Choice, who was the No. 10 pick in the Major League Baseball draft last June.
The Mavs also lost several pitchers, including the entire weekend starting rotation. UTA's returning pitchers combined for just 25 percent of the team's innings pitched total last year.
Those factors might have played a significant role in the Mavs getting picked to finish ahead of just three league opponents.
"That's just part of it," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "There's a reason why they play the games. It just matters how you finish."
Texas State, led by reigning Pitcher of the Year Carson Smith, grabbed the top spot in both preseason polls. Southeastern Louisiana was picked second.
