ARLINGTON, Texas - The Southland Conference announced its 2010 baseball coaches' and sports information directors' preseason polls Tuesday, as UT Arlington is picked to finish sixth in both polls. The Mavericks are coming off a 30-26 record in 2009 where they finished fifth place and made their second straight appearance at the SLC Tournament.
The preseason favorite in both polls is defending SLC regular season champion Texas State, who received five first-place votes in the coaches' poll with 114 points and grabbed six first-place votes with 112 points in the SIDs' poll.
UT Arlington received 73 points in the coaches' poll and 76 points in the SIDs' poll.
Both polls were identical through the top eight spots, which includes three-time defending SLC Tournament champion Sam Houston State picked second place with four first-place votes in both polls and Lamar is tabbed third place with three first-place votes from the coaches and a pair of first-place votes from the SIDs.
Southeastern Louisiana and UTSA were picked fourth and fifth ahead of the Mavericks and Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin landed seventh and eighth, respectively, in both preseason polls.
The coaches' poll had Central Arkansas, McNeese State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls to round out the poll while the SIDs voted McNeese State, Central Arkansas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls as the bottom four teams in the poll.
The SLC Tournament (May 20-23) will return to Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas, home of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks.
