Feb. 2, 2010
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Southland Conference announced its baseball preseason all-conference picks Tuesday and UT Arlington had three players named to the list as juniors Michael Choice (OF), Chad Comer (C) and Rett Varner (P) were all selected first team. The Mavericks' three first-team selections are the most by any team in the conference.
It marked the first time the Mavericks have had at least three players named to the preseason all-conference list since 2007 and it is the first time since 2004 that UTA had multiple players named first team (Hunter Pence, Mike Snapp - 2004).
Choice (Arlington, Texas) lands on the preseason All-SLC first team for the second year in a row after leading the Mavericks with 11 home runs last season and batting .413 with 52 RBI. Choice was an automatic selection after earning first team All-SLC honors last year.
Choice made school history last year becoming the first UTA player to play for the USA Baseball National Team. He helped lead Team USA to the World Baseball Challenge championship while hitting .350 with three home runs and 13 RBI over the summer schedule.
Choice, the 2008 SLC Freshman of the Year, is a two-time All-SLC selection and last season was named second team American Baseball Coaches Association South Central All-Region. He enters his junior season at UTA as the school's all-time career batting leader (.396) while also recording 18 home runs and 103 RBI in 106 career games.
Comer (Mansfield, Texas) received preseason first team honors after being selected honorable mention all-conference following his redshirt sophomore season in 2009. He batting .266 with 15 doubles, one home run and 32 RBI, but it was his catching that stood out most while throwing out 51 percent of would-be base stealers (25-for-49) in SLC play. On the season, Comer threw out 29 total base runners, which is the most by a UTA catcher in over a decade.
Varner (Trophy Club, Texas) is a preseason first team honoree after being selected the Texas Collegiate League Pitcher of the Year last summer. He went 2-3 in 16 appearances last season while pitching in 57.0 innings with 44 strikeouts. His 3.95 ERA ranked ninth in the SLC and he made 10 starts for the Mavericks.
