ARLINGTON, Texas -- After leading the Sun Belt Conference with 13 saves in 2017, UTA senior right-hander Daniel James has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List, given annually to the top reliever in college baseball, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
James, a native of Lubbock, Texas, had a historic 2017 season for the Mavericks despite missing the first three weeks of the year after offseason hip surgery. James returned with a flourish to own the second-most saves in UTA single-season history (13). He worked 28.1 innings, allowing only 25 hits and seven walks, fanning 23. James saved 11 of his games in Sun Belt play and ranked second in UTA history in single-season saves and career saves (16).
A 6-foot-4, 215-pounder, James is the only pitcher in the Sun Belt Conference to earn a spot on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.
The Mavs open their 2018 season on Friday at 2 p.m. CT vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Clay Gould Ballpark.
