ARLINGTON, Texas -- A steady stretch of rain in the North Texas area has postponed UTA's baseball tilt vs. No. 6 TCU and the Mavs will now travel to play at the Horned Frogs on Wednesday, with first pitch at Lupton Stadium set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
The teams will also reschedule a midweek game, originally slated for last Tuesday, for Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavs will turn to freshman right-hander David Moffat (0-1, 1.69 ERA) for the start on Tuesday. Moffat, a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, started last Sunday vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, allowing two hits and one run in 5.1 innings of a hard-luck loss in his NCAA debut. TCU will counter with 6-foot-9, 250-pound left-handed freshman Russell Smith. Smith, a 38th round pick out of high school by the Chicago Cubs was ranked as the 39th best prospect in the state of Texas entering the 2017 MLB Draft.
The Mavs have hit .262 as a team with a homer and a .372 slugging and .396 on-base percentage through five games, stealing three bases and fielding .976. The Mavs have turned eight double plays and thrown out 3-of-6 would-be basestealers. On the mound, the Mavs have a 4.70 team ERA in 46 innings, allowing 49 hits and 19 walks, striking out 21.
At the plate, Phil Berthiaume (.444), RJ Williams (.350), Christian Hollie (.333), Josh Minjarez (.316) and Noah Vaughan (.316) have each hit over .300 with Omar Salinas driving in a team-high seven runs with a .286 average. Vaughan owns UTA's lone homer, driving in six runs and sporting two triples. Lefties Brad Vassar (1-0, 2.45 ERA), Drew Gooch (1-0, 4.15 ERA) and Adam Meyer (0-0, 0.00 ERA), and righties Jordon West (1-0, 0.00 ERA), Tristan Tom (0-0, 0.00 ERA), Dylan Schneider (0-0, 4.15 ERA) and Logan Austin (0-0, 20.25 ERA) have each appeared in multiple games in relief.
TCU (4-2) is coming off a series win over Long Beach State, claiming the final two games of the series after a narrow 3-2 loss in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader. The Horned Frogs, ranked as high as No. 6 in the latest D1baseball.com poll, saw their bullpen fire 10.1 shutout innings over the weekend with LBSU.
The Horned Frogs have been led at the plate by a .429 mark from Josh Watson, who has three doubles, one triple, one homer and seven RBI. Adam Oviedo has hit .391 with a double and four RBI, with Michael Landestoy hitting .381 with five RBI. Luke Baker, who has reached base safely in 34 straight games, has hit .353 with a homer and three RBI. In relief, Durbin Feltman (0-0, 0.00 ERA) has two saves and six strikeouts in four innings.
TCU leads the all-time series with UTA, 101-58-1 and won all three meetings in the series last year. The Frogs own a 27-7 record vs. UTA since 2004 in a series that has seen the teams meet each year since 1969.
