By Michael Eldridge | UTAMavs.com ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington plays host to the three-day Hilton Invitational beginning Friday. The Mavericks face Baptist at 3 p.m. in the second game. HBU and Illinois matchup up in the tournament opener at 11 a.m.
“Both teams are going to be good,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “I expect a good weekend and I’m excited.”
The Mavericks are 5-2 . UT Arlington has won its first two series of the season against LA Tech and Northeastern, sandwiched around a midweek loss to Texas. The Mavericks enter the weekend at the top of the Western Athletic Conference, with several players among the league leaders. Brad Vachon tops all pitchers with a perfect 0.00 ERA in two appearances and one start, while Justin Copeland is eighth in the WAC with a .393 batting average. UTA is 5-3 all-time against the Huskies, including a 3-1 advantage in 2012. The Huskies are making their second appearance in the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational and were 2-1 last year with the lone loss coming to UTA. Illinois is 4-3 after a winning three consecutive games and 3-4 all-time against the Mavericks. This is the first meeting between the two clubs since 2007, when the Illini defeated UTA 4-3. The tournament is a part of an eight-game home stand for UTA that will close out on March 5 against No. 18 Oklahoma.
