ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA baseball will face off with Baylor on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT at Globe Life Ballpark. Tickets are available on UTATickets.com and coverage is available live through UTAMavs.com.
UTA (4-5) will be facing off with the Baylor Bears on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Globe Life Ballpark in Arlington. It marks UTA's sixth consecutive year and seventh overall UTA game played at Globe Life. UTA has faced TCU (2013), Texas A&M (2014), Oklahoma (2014), Texas (2015), Texas Tech (2016, 2017).
UTA will turn to freshman right-hander David Moffat (0-2, 5.62 ERA) for his third career start. Baylor counters with righty Jacob Ashkinos (0-1, 6.35 ERA). Moffat has worked eight innings in 2018, allowing seven hits and four walks, strikking out four. Ashkino has appeared in four games in relief, allowing four runs and seven walks in 5.2 innings.
Last year at Globe Life, the Mavs used a heroic pitching performance from Daniel James to earn a 5-1 win over No. 4 Texas Tech. UTA also won in 2015 on a walk-off hit vs. No. 14 Texas. In the win in 2017 vs. TTU, James made his season debut after missing the first month of the year due to offseason surgery. He fired four shutout innings to earn Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Mavs are coming off a series setback vs. Horizon League front-runner Wright State last weekend. UTA won the middle game of the series on a walk-off homer but suffered a two-run loss on Friday and a five-run loss on Sunday in the rubber match.
UTA has hit .246 as a team in 2018, with 13 doubles, four triples and seven homers in nine games, stealing four bases and reaching base at a .360 clip. Defensively, UTA has fielded .973, turning 13 double plays and throwing out five of 15 would-be basestealers. On the mound, UTA has a 6.56 ERA in 81 innings, walking 42 and striking out 36.
The Mavs have been led in average by senior outfielder Phil Berthiaume, who has hit .500 with two RBI in five starts. Christian Hollie has three doubles and a triple to go with a .313 average, and Noah Vaughan has cranked two triples, three homers and hit .303. Josh Minjarez and RJ Williams have each belted homers, with Will Olson hitting two, including a walk-off homer on Saturday vs. Wright State.
Baylor (4-5) is coming off a three-game stay in Frisco for a pre-conference season tournament. The Bears earned a win over Louisiana Tech and suffered losses to Texas A&M and Cal. The Bears have hit .240 as a team in 2018, with 14 doubles and seven homers in nine games, stealing two bases and owning a .343 on-base percentage. On the mound, Baylor has a 3.12 team ERA, fanning 70 and walking 53 in 78 innings. Defensively, Baylor has fielded .967, turning nine double plays and throwing out six of nine would-be basestealers. Andy Thomas leads the Bears with a .375 average, with David Wendzel and Shea Langeliers each belting two homers. Troy Montemayor has three saves in four relief outings.
