BSB: Mavs Travel to Face No. 22 Wichita State

ARLINGTON, Texas -- After opening its first 10 games in the friendly confines of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, UTA baseball will hit the road for a three-game weekend series at No. 22 Wichita State, with first pitch in the series opener on Friday slated for 6 p.m. CT at Eck Stadium. The series will resume on Saturday at 2 p.m. and conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on

UTA (4-6) will be facing off with the tradition-rich Shockers in its final non-conference weekend tune-up before Sun Belt Conference play starts next weekend. The Mavs are coming off a series loss last weekend vs. Horizon League frontrunner Wright State, winning the middle game of the series, before suffering a 9-1 loss vs. Baylor at Globe Life Ballpark in Arlington on Tuesday.

UTA will send junior right-hander Ka'ikepono Anderson (0-0, 4.91 ERA) to the mound on Friday, senior southpaw Brad Vassar (1-0, 2.89 ERA) on Saturday and senior righty Trae Patterson (0-1, 6.89 ERA) on Sunday. The Shockers counter with junior righty Cody Heuer (2-0, 3.94 ERA) on Friday and freshman lefty Liam Eddy (3-0, 1.45 ERA) on Saturday.



The Mavs have hit .242 with seven homers in 10 games, owning a .380 slugging and a .354 on-base percentage, stealing four bases. Defensively, UTA has fielded .973 with 13 double plays and sports a 6.30 team ERA in 90 innings, walking 45 and striking out 47.

At the dish, UTA has been paced by a .500 average from Phil Berthiaume. Noah Vaughan has hit .333 with a double, two triples, three homers and eight RBI. Josh Minjarez has hit .289 with a homer and seven RBI, Christian Hollie and Omar Salinas have each hit .278 and RJ Williams has batted .220. Will Olson has cranked a pair of homers. . In relief, Tristan Tom (0-0, 0.00 ERA), Ryan Buss (1-0, 3.38 ERA), Drew Gooch (1-0, 5.79 ERA), Carlos Tavera (0-0, 8.10 ERA), Dylan Schneider (0-0, 10.80 ERA), Adam Meyer (0-0, 10.80 ERA), Logan Austin (0-0, 14.73 ERA), Jordon West (1-0, 16.20 ERA) and Jake Wilcox (0-0, 20.25 ERA) have each appeared in at least three relief outings.

Wichita State (9-2) is ranked as high as No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, also checking in No. 26 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. The Shockers are coming off a three-game series win over Nebraska at Eck Stadium and suffered a narrow 2-1 loss in midweek play on Wednesday to Oral Roberts.

The Shockers have hit .269 as a team in 2018, owning a .467 slugging and a .371 on-base percentage. WSU has belted 16 homers in 11 games, stealing 16 bases. Defensively, WSU has fielded a robust .988, turning eight double plays and throwing out four of nine would-be basestealers. On the mound, Wichita State has a strong 3.64 team ERA, fanning 110 and walking just 37 in 99 innings.

At the dish, Wichita State is led by Alec Bohm, a reigning national player of the week. Bohm has hit .395 with four doubles, five homers and 17 RBI, owning 12 walks and just five strikeouts. Greyson Jenista has hit .325 with four homers, with Mason O'Brian batting .314. In relief, Tommy Barnhouse (1-1, 6.43 ERA) has two saves in five games, Chandler Sanburn (0-0, 4.50 ERA) has appeared in six games and Tyler Davis )0-0, 1.93 ERA) has fanned seven in 4.2 innings.

UTA trails the all-time series with Wichita State, 5-2, with the Shockers perfect in games played in Wichita, 5-0.
