INSIDE THE SERIES
UT Arlington and Creighton meet Wednesday for the first time since a 1992 NCAA Regional Tournament matchup in Austin. UT ARLINGTON VS. MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE
UT Arlington is 14-14 all-time against opponents from the Missouri Valley Conference. The Mavericks have played six MVC teams, including Bradley (1-0), Creighton (2-2), Evansville (2-1), Illinois State (1-0), Missouri State (8-6) and Wichita State (0-5). Earlier this season, the Mavericks knocked off Missouri State two out of three games. Creighton and Missouri State are the only two Missouri Valley Conference opponents on the Mavs' 2010 schedule.

TAKING A LOOK BACK
UTA lost 15-2 to No. 7 TCU on Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark. It was the first home midweek game of the season for the Mavs. UTA dropped to 0-2 on the season in midweek games, also losing last week at No. 17 Oklahoma. The Mavericks allowed four runs in the top of the first but then answered with a two-run home run to right field by Michael Choice in the bottom of the inning. The Mavericks would be held scoreless the remainder of the game and with a 5-2 lead going into the seventh, TCU exploded for eight runs to take a 13-2 lead. UTA starter Mark Picca took the loss in his first start of the season, despite striking out a career-high eight batters. Picca's previous high was five strikeouts during his freshman year on the road at Northwestern State (4/25/08). Three UTA relievers combined allowed six hits and 10 runs with four walks in 3.1 innings. Freshman second baseman Cody Dyvig tallied his first career multi-hit game as he singled up the middle and recorded an infield single while entering the game in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter.

ON THE HORIZON
The Mavericks open Southland Conference competition this weekend against three-time defending SLC Tournament champion Sam Houston State (3-10). The series will begin on Friday, March 12 (6:30 p.m.) and will continue on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). Sam Houston State swept the Mavericks in both team's opening-conference weekend a year ago in Huntsville (8-2, 7-5, 7-5). The Bearkats will be in search of their first road victory of the season after starting the season 0-4. Sam Houston State will start the series with right-handed pitcher Dallas Gallant, who was a preseason All-Southland Conference selection along with UTA Saturday starter Rett Varner.

UT ARLINGTON PLAYING BACK-TO-BACK MIDWEEK GAMES
UT Arlington's matchup with Creighton on Wednesday will be the Mavs first back-to-back midweek games of the season. Last season UTA played back-to-back midweek games three times, while going 1-1 twice and sweeping Minnesota. UTA also played midweek games on a Tuesday/Thursday early in the season losing against TCU (3-11) and then defeating Iowa Wesleyan (7-1), with both games being played at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Steffan Guest EXTENDS HIT STREAK TO 12 GAMES
Senior Steffan Guest is the only Maverick with at least one base hit in every game this season and with that and his one hit in the only game he played last season, Guest owns a career best 12-game hit streak. Guest has six multiple hit games this season, including three in a row against BYU. He leads the team with 19 base hits, four doubles and is second on the team with 13 RBI. The lone hit Guest had in the 2009 season was in his only at-bat against TCU on March 3 at Clay Gould Ballpark. Guest has batted cleanup in eight games this season and hit fifth twice.

WEDNESDAY'S STARTER: Preston Beck (RHP)
Freshman Preston Beck gets his second career start Wednesday against Creighton, which marks the second straight week Beck has gotten the nod in a midweek game. Beck made his career debut last Tuesday against No. 17 Oklahoma in Norman where he pitched 4.0 innings and allowed four hits, three runs and one walk with four strikeouts. Beck is also one of the top hitters for the Mavericks this season batting .316 (12-for-38) with six runs, two doubles and two RBI. Beck is one of two Maverick freshmen to start on the hill this season and one of nine UTA newcomers to make an appearance.

CHOICE CLIMBS RECORD BOOKS, MOVES INTO FIFTH PLACE ON ALL-TIME CAREER HOME RUN LIST
Michael Choice moved into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time UTA career home run record book with his 23rd career home run against TCU on Tuesday night. Choice is now one home run behind Richard Wilkinson (24, 1977-80) for fourth place and three behind Ryan Roberts (26, 2002-03) for third place. Matt Mize (31, 1998-99) and Craig Martin (27, 1998-2001) are the top two on the career home run list. Choice's two-run homer on Tuesday also moved him into ninth place on the all-time career RBI list with 117. Choice moved past Clay Gould (116, 1990-93) and Richard Valenta (116, 1977-80). With just two RBI Choice will tie Pat Varni (119, 1986-89) for eighth on the list. Choice also moved into 10th place on the career total bases chart with 291. He now needs one RBI to equal Matt Mize (291) for ninth place and with 11 total bases Choice will move past former all-time great Trey Hillman (301, 1982-85) for eighth place.
