ARLINGTON, Texas -- UTA baseball will face off with its fourth consecutive ranked foe on the road, traveling to face No. 9 Texas A&M on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Blue Bell Ballpark. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.
The Mavs will turn to freshman righty Carlos Tavera (0-0, 12.27 ERA) for his first career start in his fifth appearance. Tavera has worked 3.2 innings over his first four relief outings, allowing four hits and five runs, walking three and striking out three. Texas A&M will start Chandler Jozwiak (1-0, 2.35 ERA) in his fifth start of the year on Tuesday. Jozwiak has worked 15.1 innings, allowing 13 hits and five walks, striking out 18. On Tuesday, Jozwiak worked five one-run innings vs. Northwestern State in a no-decision, fanning eight without a walk.
UTA (4-9) has two tune-ups remaining before entering conference play with a three-game series vs. Georgia State over the weekend at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavs are in the midst of a four-game road swing – each against top-25 foes – before hosting red-hot Minnesota on Wednesday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavs have hit .227 as a team in 2018, collecting 16 doubles, seven triples, seven homers and 59 runs in 13 games, owning a .348 slugging and a .336 on-base percentage. Defensively UTA has fielded .969, turning 16 double plays and throwing out six of 18 would-be basestealers. On the mound, UTA has a 6.38 team ERA in 115.2 innings, allowing 154 hits and 57 walks, striking out 69.
At the plate, senior outfielder Phil Berthiaume has hit .412 to lead the team in average, reaching base at a .630 clip. Junior centerfielder Noah Vaughan has a .313 average and a .431 on-base percentage, slugging two doubles, three triples, three homers and eight RBI. Josh Minjarez and RJ Williams have each belted homers, with Will Olson cranking a pair of blasts and driving in seven runs. In relief, UTA has seen right-handers Tristan Tom (0-0, 0.00 ERA), Cody Wernli (0-0, 0.00 ERA), Daniel James (0-2, 6.23 ERA), Andrew Gross (0-0, 9.00 ERA), Jordon West (1-0, 9.64 ERA), Dylan Schneider (0-0, 10.80 ERA) and Logan Austin (0-0, 14.73 ERA) have each appeared in at least three games. Lefties Ryan Buss (1-0, 3.12 ERA), Drew Gooch (1-0, 5.79 ERA), Adam Meyer (0-0, 10.80 ERA) and Jake Wilcox (0-0, 16.20 ERA) have each appeared in at least four games.
Texas A&M (16-1) is coming off a three-game sweep over Long Beach State over the weekend and have won 16 of its first 17 games, with the lone loss coming to Louisiana Tech in the opener of the Frisco College Baseball Classic on March 2. The Aggies have won seven straight entering the series. TAMU has hit .328 with a .402 on-base percentage, slugging 19 homers and scoring 134 runs in 17 games. The Aggies have fielded .972, turning 16 double plays and throwing out three would-be basestealers. On the mound, TAMU has a 2.05 team ERA in 17 games, fanning 159 and walking just 40 in 154 innings.
Texas A&M leads the all-time series with UTA, 28-9, including a 22-3 all-time record in gams played in College Station. UTA won the meeting in 2017 in Arlington but are searching for its first win at Texas A&M since 2012.
