ARLINGTON, Texas -- UT Arlington begins its first and last season in the Western Athletic Conference when it travels to begin league play at UTSA on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Mavericks enter conference play having lost four of the last five games and are just 1-4 on the road this season. The road does not get any easier for UT Arlington entering the series with the Roadrunners. UTSA is 11-1 at home, the lone loss coming to Washington State on March 8. However, UTSA has dropped its last three games, including a 11-5 loss to No. 18 Rice on Wednesday.
"They are going to be tough," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "They are very offensive and have two of the better arms back this year. They are leading the conference in hitting and runs scored. But we have done well there. We have taken two of three the last two times we have visited."
UTA is 41-29 against the Roadrunners all-time, but are just 14-16 when playing on the road.
The Roadrunners enter with a league-leading .320 batting average and have eight players hitting above .300. They also lead the WAC in hits (237), total bases (332) and hits per game (11.29).
The Mavericks counter with Matt Shortall on offense. Shortall has the top overall batting average in the conference at .403. He has a 10-game hitting streak and is second in slugging percentage at .642. As a team, UTA is batting .275 and features four players batting over .300.
Pitching for the Mavericks this weekend will be Brad Vachon and Chase Weaver. Sunday's starter is yet to be determined. The pair hold the top two spots in opposing batting average in the WAC, with Weaver having a .143 opposing batting average and Vachon at a .154. Both are in the top 10 for the conference in ERA.
