ARLINGTON, Texas - For the third time this season and for the second week in a row, UT Arlington's Jason Mitchell has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Mitchell (Phoenix, Ariz.) becomes the first Southland pitcher in over five years to receive consecutive pitcher of the week awards. Mitchell has received the weekly honor in three of the seven weeks of the season.
Mitchell is coming off his third straight complete game and first complete-game shutout of his career in a 4-0 victory over Nicholls on Thursday, April 1. Mitchell threw 100 pitches (72 strikes) while retiring 23 of the final 25 Nicholls' batters.
Mitchell allowed only one Colonel to reach second base after the first inning while no Nicholls player advanced to third base in the game that lasted just two hours and seven minutes. He finished the game allowing three hits with nine strikeouts without allowing a walk.
Mitchell is 4-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 55.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 61 batters, allowed nine walks while opponents are batting just .206 against him this season.
He was also selected conference pitcher of the week on March 29 and on March 2.
In addition, Mitchell is currently tied for fourth in the nation in complete games (3) and strikeouts (61) and ranks fourth in the country in innings pitched (55.0).
