BAXTER EARNS THIRD SLC PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONOR
April 11, 2005
ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington senior right-hander Jake Baxter was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 11, the league announced Monday. This is the third time this season Baxter has been honored after winning the award on Feb. 8 and March 14. It is also the fifth time that a Mavs pitcher has taken home this honor as Michael Gardner was honored on Feb. 15 and Dillon Gee won the award on March 28.
Baxter (Westminster, Calif.) was honored after he tossed a complete-game six-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory over Texas State on April 8. He cruised through eight innings and struck out a season-best 11 Bobcat hitters. He was just one strikeout shy of tieing his career-high of 12 strikeouts he set against Baylor on March 9, 2004. It was the third complete-game in the last four starts for Baxter and was the first complete-game shutout for UTA since Gardner tossed a CG shutout against Nicholls State on April 9, 2004.
Baxter overcame some troubles to preserve the shutout in the ninth inning as TXST put runners on second and third with nobody out and the heart of the order coming up. Baxter struck out the next hitter before walking the cleanup hitter to load the bases. The 11th punchout of the game would follow and then a groundout to second ended the game.
On the season, Baxter is 7-1 with a 1.73 ERA in 10 starts. He has struck out 65 hitters in 73 innings and opponents are hitting .253 against Baxter. He has limited his opponents to two earned runs or less in eight of his 10 starts.
The Mavs return to action on April 12 when they play host to No.12 Baylor. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark with UTA President James Spaniolo throwing out the first pitch.
