Baseball set for Baylor, Mary Hardin-Baylor
April 11, 2011
ARLINGTON, Tex. - UT Arlington plays a couple midweek games starting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts Baylor at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks also host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Baylor will mark the fourth game UT Arlington has played against a Big 12 team this season. The Mavericks have lost the previous three, though one was by one run to Oklahoma and another was in extra innings against Texas A&M. The Bears beat UTA 6-1 earlier this season in Waco.
Here is a closer look at UT Arlington's midweek games:
Baylor (18-15) at UT Arlington (17-15)
Mary Hardin-Baylor (14-17) at UT Arlington (17-15)
Wednesday, 4:00 p.m.
FIRST PITCH: UT Arlington will play a couple midweek games this week, hosting Baylor on Tuesday and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday. Both games will be played at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavericks, behind RF Preston Beck and stellar bullpen performances from Calan Pritchard, Michael Morales and Adam Boydston, were able to halt a two-game losing streak Sunday against Southeastern Louisiana. Baylor has lost three of its last four. The Bears dropped two of three to No. 8 Texas over the weekend. They also lost 3-2 to Sam Houston State in 10 innings last Tuesday. Max Muncy is Baylor's leading hitter. He leads the team in all three triple-crown categories with his .320 batting average, four home runs and 27 RBI. Brooks Pinckard is among the nation's leaders in stolen bases, having swiped 27 in 29 attempts. Mary Hardin-Baylor enters Wednesday's game having been swept by Concordia Texas over the weekend. The Crusaders were to play Arlington Baptist on Tuesday.
INSIDE THE SERIES (BAYLOR): Baylor is 77-29 all-time against UT Arlington and has won the last four times the two teams have met. The Mavericks' last win in the series came in Arlington on April 14, 2009. However, that was UTA's lone win in the last 13 games against the Bears. UT Arlington is 17-31 all-time against Baylor in Arlington. The two teams met earlier this season in Waco, where the Bears used a four-run fourth inning to beat the Mavericks 6-1. Five Baylor pitchers held the Mavericks to one run, a homer off the bat of 3B Brian Nephew, who went 3-for-4 in the contest.
INSIDE THE SERIES (MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR): UT Arlington and Mary Hardin-Baylor renew a series that had previously been discontinued since 1987. The Mavericks own an 8-1 advantage in the all-time series and won the last three times they faced the Crusaders. Mary Hardin-Baylor's only win in the series came in Arlington on April 9, 1986.
STRANGE STAT: When UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas turns to his bullpen early it is not time to panic. UTA actually has a better record when its starters come out before they complete 5.0 innings (10-6) than when they last longer than 5.0 innings (7-9). That stat is exaggerated even further in Southland Conference games, where the Mavs are 4-0 when starters come out before completing 5.0 innings. They are 4-7 when the starter lasts through 5.0 innings.
