The Mavericks lost 4-3 at Oklahoma (3/2) earlier this season and lost 5-4 (10 inn.) against Baylor on Tuesday, April 13, in Arlington. Following their home-and-home series with Baylor, UTA faces Big 12 foes Texas (4/20), Oklahoma State (4/27) and Texas A&M (5/18), which are all scheduled on the road. UTA has its most wins against any Big 12 opponent verses the Baylor Bears with a 29-75 record. Last season UTA defeated both Baylor (5-4) and Oklahoma (8-5) in Arlington. UT Arlington is 17-31 at home and 12-44 on the road against Baylor.
TAKING A LOOK BACK
The Mavericks lost 5-4 in 10 innings against Baylor on Tuesday. Baylor's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning led them to their 11th consecutive win during their non-conference schedule. The Mavericks led 3-0 and later tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning. Left-handed relief pitcher Brian Watson struck out a career-high six batters in 4.2 innings of relief. Watson at one point struck out six of eight batters and retired eight of the first 10 he faced while entering in the sixth inning. Michael Choice went 1-for-2 to extend his hit streak to 10 games while also reaching base safely for the 45th consecutive game. Choice was walked three times against Baylor or Tuesday with two intentional walks thrown in.
ON THE HORIZON
The Mavericks finish their ninth week of the regular season with a three-game conference series at McNeese State, April 16-18, in Lake Charles, La. The Mavericks open their five-game road trip Wednesday at Baylor and following their series against the Cowboys from McNeese State, they will play at Texas on Tuesday, April 20, at 6:05 p.m.
THE RACE FOR THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Texas State (12-3), the defending league champion, moved ahead of the pack once again with a sweep over Central Arkansas while Southeastern Louisiana (10-5) moved into second place taking two out of three over the Mavs. Northwestern State (9-5) is tied with Stephen F. Austin (9-5) after both teams won two out of three last weekend. McNeese State (9-6) dropped into sole possession of fifth place after dropping two out of three against Sam Houston State. The Mavericks (8-7) are now tied with Sam Houston State (8-7) for sixth and seventh place while Lamar (6-9) jumped into eighth place in the league standings after taking two out of three against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last weekend.
Michael Choice NAMED BASEBALL AMERICA MIDSEASON FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN
Baseball America announced its Midseason College All-America team on April 8 and UT Arlington's Michael Choice was one of three outfielders in the country named a first team selection. The publication's midseason team included the top 15 players (10 position players, 5 pitchers) in the country.
Michael Choice BREAKS UTA SINGLE-SEASON INTENTIONAL WALKS RECORD
In only 32 games, Michael Choice broke the UTA single-season intentional walks record that was previously set in 2006 by current Seattle Mariners catcher Adam Moore with seven. Choice now has 10 intentional walks this season. He broke the single-season intentional walks record against then-No. 22 Southeastern Louisiana (4/11/10). Choice broke the record while receiving his sixth walk in six consecutive plate appearances. Choice now has 15 career intentional walks after receiving two as a freshman and three as a sophomore.
Michael Choice ONLY THREE WALKS OFF NATIONAL LEAD - 42 WALKS RANKS SECOND IN NCAA
Teams are learning that the easiest way to not let Michael Choice beat them is by not throwing him a strike. The junior All-American is cooperating with 42 walks in 33 games played. Only Rice's Anthony Rendon (45 walks) has more free passes than Choice. He has 12 games where he has received multiple walks, including five three-walk games and one game with four walks. He has been walked at least once in seven consecutive games and in 13 of the last 14 games he has been issued at least one free pass. He already has 13 more walks than he did a year ago when he led the team with 29. In fact, Choice's 42 walks are equal to or more than the UTA team leader finished the season with the last 20 years. In 41 previous years at UTA, only eight end of the season walk totals are more than what Choice has collected in the first 33 games. Choice has now been walked in nine of his last 12 plate appearances.
Michael Choice CONTINUES STREAK: 45 STRAIGHT GAMES REACHING BASE SAFELY
Michael Choice has reached base safely in 45 straight games dating back to last season. The last game Choice did not reach base was last season against Oklahoma State (4/28/09) where he went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly. He finished the 2009 season with a 12-game hit streak and this season has hit safely in 28 of 33 games. In the five games this season Choice hasn't recorded a base hit he has tallied 10 walks, and he had four walks against Missouri State (2/26).
