BURUM NAMED SLC HITTER OF THE WEEK
April 17, 2006
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington junior designated hitter Ben Burum tied two school records in being named the Aeropostale Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for the week of April 17, the league announced Monday. Burum becomes the fifth Maverick to be honored this season after Adam Moore for the weeks of Feb. 13 and March 6, Robby Winn for the week of March 13, David McLeod for the week of March 27 and Ryan Riddle for the week of April 3.
Burum (Arlington) was honored after going 7-for-7 with four doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and four runs scored in the three-game series with McNeese State. He entered the first game in a pinch-hit role with two runners on and the Mavs trailing by three in the seventh inning. With a 1-1 count, Burum got a hold of ball and deposited it over the fence in right center for his first career home run.
His three-run blast earned him the start the next day and he promptly tied two school records by going 5-for-5 with three doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored. It marked the 29th time that a Maverick has collected five hits in a game and the 12th time a player has recorded three doubles in a contest.
The left-handed Burum was not in the starting lineup against the left-handed pitcher in series finale, but did enter the game in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter. He nearly collected his second home run of the series went he went opposite field for a double off the top of the fence.
Burum raised his average 176 points over the weekend to .205. He has four doubles, one triple, one home run and 11 RBIs.
The Mavs return to the diamond on April 18-19 when they host Hawai'i-Hilo. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on both nights at Clay Gould Ballpark.
