ARLINGTON, Texas - A busy week of baseball for UT Arlington begins with the first of two nonconference games Tuesday at Sam Houston State. First pitch at Don Sanders Stadium between the former Southland Conference rivals is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Mavericks are playing host to Arkansas-Little Rock at Clay Gould Ballpark at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Western Athletic Conference play ramps up again with the three-game series at New Mexico State beginning Friday.
UT Arlington is 21-18 overall and 10-5 in the WAC, trailing first-place CSU Bakersfield by one game. The Mavericks are coming off a series loss (2-1) this past weekend at Seattle U.
UT Arlington and Sam Houston State are playing for the first time as nonconference foes. The Bearkats lead the all-time series 51-47. However, UT Arlington was 3-1 against SHSU in 2012, including a 7-6 win in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Mavericks are 1-6 in Tuesday games in 2013. UTA's lone win came against No. 16 Oklahoma on March 5 at Clay Gould Ballpark. UT Arlington was 5-3 in 2012.
The Mavericks are looking to avenge a 12-2 defeat to UALR on March 12 in Little Rock. UTA is 4-2 all-time against the Trojans and 4-1 at home.Brent Bollinger is making his first start of the season against Sam Houston. The senior has made eight appearances this season, pitching 10 innings and giving up five earned run. Junior designated hitter Matt Shortall is leading UTA is batting average (.359), slugging percentage (.536), hits (55) and RBI (38). All those totals rank among the top 10 in the WAC.
